Pain intensified, and Lara struggled in vain. Nalbandian slipped his ankles behind her neck and pressed down. His fangs ripped her flesh. Blood poured from the wound into his mouth. A childhood nightmare of falling filled her psyche, and weakness seeped into her limbs. Helplessness overwhelmed, and her body surrendered to the shadows.

Lara fought to maintain consciousness. A face loomed close to hers, fathomless eyes much like Bobby’s but not Bobby. Disenfranchised feelings intersected her mind. She tried to utilize Bobby’s teachings, to protect herself from a vampire, but nothing she did prevented Nalbandian from invading her thoughts. He forced his will upon her in a way she didn’t understand and couldn’t defy.

She lay on the bed, unable to summon the strength to resist or to run or even to cover herself. Nalbandian posed nearby, also naked, and admiring her. His eyes glistened crimson, transformed from the shy stargazer to the feral hunter. No escape. No hope remained.

Blood dripped from his fangs and smeared his lips. He bathed in it, relishing the act and flaunting control. Fear arced through consciousness. Life as she knew it ended. She belonged to Nalbandian’s will.

“You’re not being forced,” Nalbandian said. “A moment ago, you made a conscious choice. You’re about to make another, and our paths will be forever linked.”

To emphasize her thoughts, Nalbandian raised her feet, braced them against his thighs, and rubbed her ankles. Lara did not resist, unable to resist. His act was pedestrian in its innocence, subtle in its sensuousness.

“Hundreds every hour,” Nalbandian said.

Lara didn’t understand.

“The Perseids. Hundreds of meteorites every hour, though human eyes miss most of them. You and I will see them all.”

Lara didn’t want to see anything with this vampire. She wanted to escape, but she remained unable to veer from his beautiful face.

“In a few minutes, you’ll beg me.” Nalbandian’s softened tone was replaced by confident command, equally as sensual.

What if he dragged her outside? What if he forced her eyes open? Tilted her head to watch the sky? Why would she beg him?

“The urge for sexual gratification will be as powerful as your bloodlust. Forever entwined, you can no more avoid one than the other. You’ve tasted the power that arises from drinking blood. Sexual passion is equally demanding.”

Lara shook her head. His words were disjointed. Nalbandian didn’t expect her to beg for shooting stars. He expected her to beg for—

“I sense you’re newly turned, resisting the bloodlust. You’ve never killed, have you?” He didn’t wait for an answer. “Time evaporates human frailties and overrides the remaining morality. We’re creatures of this world, with every right to exist that mankind maintains. Our existence may require the occasional human sacrifice. So what? If desire wells, take life from the bottom-sucking scum. No one will miss the drug dealers or the shoe salesmen.”

Nalbandian lowered her left leg to the bed, but stepped closer and raised the other to rest against his shoulder. He nuzzled her calf and tilted her leg to kiss her ankle.

“You’ve crossed another barrier.
